Recount doesn’t change a thing

Carlton County Auditor Paul Gassert said the hand recount of the District 4 Carlton County Commissioner race resulted in exactly the same ballot count as the election night vote, which means Mark Thell will be the new District 4 Commissioner starting in January.

Carlton County board chairwoman Susan Zmyslony had officially requested the recount for the District 4 race after results showed Thell upsetting her by just 16 votes.

There were 3,806 votes cast in the race. Thell had 1,905 to Zmyslony’s 1,889. There were 12 write-in votes.

Zmyslony said she congratulated Thell on his victory after the recount.

“As for me, I will continue to stay involved in activities within the county and I look forward to what the future will bring,” said Zmyslony, only the third woman to ever serve as Carlton County Commissioner. The other two were Patty Murto and, before her, Rita Blais.

Thell praised the auditor and his staff for being highly professional “in their duties of preserving and reporting the record of the voters.”

“Makes you feel good to be a Minnesotan, our elections are fair and honest,” Thell said. “Thanks to all who voted and the election judges who serve to make our democracy strong.”

Gassert said the count Tuesday took about two-and-a-half hours.

Coming soon … Pine Knot News artist series

Grocery shopping, delivery service expands to Cloquet

Age Well Arrowhead is now offering a grocery shopping and delivery service for older adults and those who can’t go out to shop for themselves in the Cloquet area.

Age Well Arrowhead originally partnered with Super One Foods in West Duluth to offer Groceries-to-Go since December 2016. However, a recent grant will allow the service to expand to Super One Foods stores in Cloquet as well as Superior and the Duluth Kenwood neighborhood.

Clients call in on Tuesday between 9 a.m. and noon, and groceries are delivered on Wednesday or Thursday, depending on location. Age Well Arrowhead bills clients $15 for each shop and Super One bills them for the groceries. Clients can register and use the service only when they need it. No computer access is needed.
