A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news

Letters to the editor

Thanks for being there

To the editor:

Thanks to the Pine Knot News for highlighting the Oldenburg House and musical offerings/efforts.

Starting a new business at our age is a little risky, but from the moment we opened Oldenburg House, we have been surrounded by individuals and organizations who use their creativity for the good of this great community. The Pine Knot News — with its local owners and local news — is doing a great job of capturing the warmth and “pay it forward” spirit that makes this a great place to live, work and play.

What a great radio station we have!

To the editor:

After helping to broadcast the Cromwell high school football tournament game, I want the residents of Carlton County to know what a great radio station we have in town. The next time you encounter an employee of WKLK radio, please thank them for all that they do for our community. Every morning during the week, we start our day with the morning show brought to us by the A Squad. Each week we have the opportunity to receive money-saving deals on the Radio Auction. Saturday mornings wouldn’t be the same without the basket of locals on Northland Magazine and Coach’s Corner. Not to mention the multitude of local high school sporting events broadcasted throughout the year. In between all of these great programs, classic rock plays to remind us of how music is supposed to sound. We are extremely fortunate to have such an engaged local media keeping us informed and entertained. Thank you, WKLK.

Resurrection

To the editor:

I just want to thank you for stepping out in courage to resurrect the Pine Knot News. We migrated to the area from Superior in 2017. When we moved here, I looked for the local paper and found only the Pine Journal. I was a bit disappointed in not finding the Pine Knot News because there is a story about it that is part of my family lore.

My dad was born in Cloquet and had many relatives here; he fled the Fire of 1918 with his family, but there is a story in our family that goes like this: Dad was a rather precocious lad at the age of 4 and was looking at the newspaper one day. My grandmother said he proceeded to read the title as “Pin-e-K-not,” surprising his mother with his ability to read. After that, the story was passed down throughout the family, and the paper was often referred to in the family with his unique moniker.

Interestingly, when I told my sister the paper was being published again, the first thing she said was,“Remember that story about Dad reading the title?””

When I found your paper in our mailbox a couple of weeks ago, I was surprised and elated. Here was a paper filled with information and news to help my husband and me get better acquainted with our new community. The information on candidates vying for local seats in the upcoming election was exactly what we had been searching for. Online information was sparse and difficult to locate. We could feel much better informed when we cast our ballots, thanks to your paper.

Your paper carries helpful stores, relevant news, and the flavor of this area that we feel thankful to have chosen as our retirement destination. Thank you for taking the chance that there are still folks who will support a local paper. We will, for sure.
