Carlton VFW brings a Merry Christmas to many area families

The Carlton VFW 2962 Post and Auxiliary gave out 76 Christmas food baskets to area veterans' families and other families in the Carlton County area. In addition to the food baskets, 97 children received a gift plus a winter jacket and socks.

To help pay for these, the VFW auxiliary and post members raised $16,016 through their annual Christmas Auction, and received donations from the city of Carlton, local businesses and generous community members from Carlton, Wrenshall, Esko, Cloquet and other surrounding communities.

The monies also help to bring Christmas cheer to the Silver Bay Veterans Home, Inter-Faith (20 veterans now reside at the care center) and MACV House in Duluth. Each event takes many volunteers to make it all happen. The Christmas Auction had 22 volunteers from post, auxiliary and community members, and 11 volunteers for the food baskets and Christmas with Santa. They are grateful to the community for their support.

The "Toys for Carlton Area Kids" has been collecting toys for 24 years, and partnering with the Carlton VFW to make sure that kids in need receive a gift on Christmas Day. Businesses in Carlton, Wrenshall, and the Carlton schools put out decorated boxes to collect toys, hats, scarves and mittens for four weeks before the Christmas Baskets are delivered. The donations are very much appreciated.

As you shop throughout the year, keep the toy drive in mind. As many of us do, designate a place in your home for those special donations. Thank you to everyone who donated again this year.
