Stu Lourey will bring knowledge and energy to Minn. Senate
To the editor:
Recently, I’ve been reminded of the saying that “It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness,” or, it’s better to take action than to complain. Many of us have been complaining a lot about the way the Republicans have worked to block many progressive initiatives.
We now have a unique opportunity to take action at the polls. Because Sen. Tony Lourey was appointed to head Minnesota Human Services, his Senate seat is now open. It’s crucial we elect a great candidate to represent us!
I was super-excited when Stu Lourey announced his candidacy. Stu has been involved in and around politics his entire life. He understands the issues that we care about — health care, education, good jobs, and strong communities! He is also young and brings a new perspective and energy to tackle the issues such as the high costs of college, health care, housing and the lack of living-wage jobs. He understands mental health issues, the opioid epidemic, broadband for all, and the importance of quality PreK-12 public education.
Another thing that makes Stu an excellent candidate is his unique ability to connect to others. Through his work for Sens. Al Franken and Tina Smith, he has built deep connections with families, doctors, tribal members, union members, and so many others across our region, sharing their perspectives on issues at the national level and making sure our voices are part of the important decisions being made.
I’ve known Stu Lourey since he was just a little kid. He’s smart and, equally important, he has heart! Let’s elect him to be our next Senator by voting for him in the primary on Jan. 22 and electing him on Feb. 5! Let’s feel good about “lighting a candle” rather than just complaining!

Michelle Lee deserves your vote
To the editor:
The founding fathers envisioned active practitioners to enter public office for a short period and then return to the practitioner’s chosen profession. Individuals running for public office advocate for legislative changes that impact daily life. The collective active experience articulates the legislative, the agenda facilitates change. Individuals continuing to hold public office become stagnant and legislation becomes partisan. The Minnesota Senate District 11 constituents do not live in a vacuum. The constituents are independent-minded on the district issues, achievements, and social investment. Elections are established term limits for elected officials. If the elected official is perceived as not “working” for the constituents, the electorate has the authority to vote the incumbent out.
I first met Michelle Lee in 1984 and have followed her award-winning broadcast journalism career. Michelle has much to offer constituents.
She has all of the following qualifications:
• Critical thinker: She spent time on the Congressional campaign trail interacting with constituents, actively listening to the concerns and paraphrasing the concerns prior to responding.
• Informed citizen: While campaigning, she met with constituents across Minnesota’s Senate District 11.
• Responsible leader: Michelle Lee has sharpened her skills to both actively listen and ask the powerful questions to meet district constituents’ diverse needs.
• Thoughtful steward: Michelle Lee demonstrates her ability to provide a voice for all the district’s constituents no matter their individual socio-economic background.
As a former union steward, former corrections officer and former mental health practitioner, I support Michelle Lee for the Minnesota Senate District 11 vacancy.

Former State Senator, Lt. Governor, endorses Lee
To the editor:
I don’t often write letters on behalf of political candidates, nor do I agree to serve as campaign advisor to candidates I don’t respect. But I chose to do so now to let the voters of Senate District 11 know what a unique opportunity they have this year to vote for my friend Michelle Lee.
I’ve known Michelle for more than 30 years during the time I served as a State Senator and Lt. Governor under Mark Dayton. The qualities and character Michelle exhibited these many years have strengthened my resolve that she’s exactly the candidate we need to fight for us in St. Paul.
Michelle’s work in and for this region of Minnesota through her stellar journalism career and community engagement fully embodies the values of hard work, honesty, integrity and perseverance she’ll take with her to accomplish great things in the State Senate.
Michelle Lee is a leader with the depth of knowledge and understanding few others possess. I trust her and it’s my hope you’ll give her the honor of representing you in the Minnesota State Senate. She will make you proud as your voice in St. Paul.
