Carlton happenings

Tomorrow, Feb. 23, will mark the 10th anniversary of the Robert Rodd Memorial Scholarship Hockey Costume Game/Fundraiser, and its final year. About two years after my husband Robert passed away, Joe and Rhonda Broneak approached me about helping to raise money for scholarships for Carlton High School graduating seniors. They knew I was trying to raise funds for a scholarship in Robert's memory, and suggested a fun hockey game and raffles to keep the scholarship going.

Since the scholarship was started, we have awarded 25 scholarships at $500 each to deserving Carlton graduates for their post-secondary education. Robert believed that education was important, whether a person attended college or a technical school. Over the years the scholarship fundraiser has grown to include a silent auction, raffles, a kids' shoot-out, coloring contest and so much more.

Robert was at the hockey rink before the arena was built. Then, there was an outdoor hockey rink and a public rink where kids of all ages could skate. In those days, there was warming house with an attached garage for a snowblower, and eventually a Zamboni and a viewing area upstairs. Robert would make sure the ice was ready for the many kids who came to play hockey or skate for fun after school. Then he would work in the concession stand until 8 or 9 o'clock. When the arena was built, he would make sure the ice was ready in the building; and if there was outdoor ice, that would also be ready for the kids. To this day there are people who still remember Robert at Carlton Hockey, and they often tell me what a smiling, funny (in a good way) and nice person he was.

Everyone is invited to come and enjoy this last scholarship fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Four Seasons Complex in Carlton, 1-5 p.m.

The hockey game starts at 2 p.m. Dinner runs 1-5 p.m., and throughout the day there will be raffles, silent auction, Plinko, Chuck-A-Puck, a kids' coloring contest (see Page 20 in this issue of the Pine Knot News, or coloring pages that day), a kids' shoot-out and photos with the Zamboni.

Volunteers are needed and welcome. Call Leola Rodd at 218-310-6065 to be a part of this fun event.
