Individual sections set for next week
Seventh-grader Warren Hietala wrestles hard in the 113-pound class but loses 11-3 at the Section 7AA team meet in Proctor Tuesday.
Eighth-grader Reese Sheldon wins in the 170-pound class over Hibbing's Cole Verichak by a 4-2 decision at the Section 7AA team meet in Proctor Tuesday.
Junior Zeb Wehr, wrestling up at 160 pounds, put up a good fight but lost the match by pin at 4:34 at the Section 7AA team meet in Proctor Tuesday.
The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys wrestling team came up short Tuesday night in Proctor as the Hibbing Bluejackets defeated the Lumberjacks 43-27 in the Section 7AA team meet.
Entering the section team portion of the tournament, the Lumberjacks were the third seed in the north subsection, behind Grand Rapids and Hibbing. The Virginia Blue Devils were the fourth seed, and Proctor-Hermantown was the fifth seed.
Proctor-Hermantown and Virginia had to have a dual meet to see who would advance to meet the top-seeded Thunderhawks of Grand Rapids. Virginia defeated Proctor-Hermantown 60-10, to set up the final four in the north subsection.
The Lumberjacks faced a very strong Hibbing team, a team which they didn't meet in the regular season. The Lumberjacks were forced to forfeit two matches due to not having enough wrestlers to fill all the competitive weights.
Hibbing garnered eight wins while the Lumberjacks got six wins in the match with Hibbing. The winners included eighth-grader Cooper Abbett at 106 pounds with a forfeit, and ninth-grader Deeken Fjeld at 126. Griffin Fjeld wrestled up in weight class and won the 152-pound match. Tyler Harms-Synkiew was the winner at 138, Reese Sheldon was the 170-pound winner, and Hunter Senarighi won the 195-pound class.
With the win, Hibbing moves on to the section semifinals and will meet the Mora Mustangs from the south subsection. Grand Rapids will square off against Princeton in the other semifinal Friday night in Milaca.
The Section 7AA individual meet will be held Feb. 22-23 in Hibbing and the Lumberjacks hope to do well there.
"We have a lot of young wrestlers who, if they do what they need to do, could be moving on to the state meet," head coach Al Denman said. "We just don't have the numbers to fill a complete roster at the team level, but individually we are very strong."
