A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news
I’m not really into NASCAR that much but I do follow Denny Hamlin in his FedEx race car, and this weekend he won the Daytona 500. I follow him because he drives the FedEx car and our family and friends play the “FedEx game” whenever we are out on the highways. It all started more than 10 years ago when I was spending a lot of time helping a friend interview for jobs and, as the miles and miles got pretty boring after a time, we started spotting FedEx trucks and giving each other points for each time we spotted one first. If you spotted one and were the first to yell out, “FedEx!” you got a point, but if you said “FedEx” and it wasn’t one of their trucks, you lost a point; so we had to be very careful to be sure it was one. Now, it’s just a game we play from time to time. But it kept us from dozing off on those long car rides. It’s especially fun on those long trips to Minneapolis, Denver, etc. Just ask Mary Dahlman about this game.
Congratulations to Judy and Roy Miller on being voted the Queen and King at the Villa Vista/Cardinal Court Valentine’s Day Royalty. Roy and Judy are originally from the Meadowlands area, and they are a great addition to the care center family.
There’s not much time left now to attend a home boys’ basketball game at the school. The boys play Nevis on Friday, Feb. 22 and Nashwauk-Keewatin March 1. The girls’ last regular season game was scheduled for Thursday, Feb 21. Then tournaments will follow for both teams. It’s hard to believe that the basketball season is almost over; they sure helped the winter months pass by.
The Bethany community choir is now practicing every Saturday at 9 a.m. for its Easter Cantata. New members are welcome to come and join them.
Pastor Pat McCormack’s last worship service in our area will be a joint service at 10 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran in Cromwell March 3, followed by a potluck dinner. I hear it might get warm, as Pastor will get “roasted”! Everyone is welcome to come to bid him farewell and best wishes.
Did you know we are gaining three to four minutes of daylight everyday now? Sure is great to have more sunshine in the evenings now. And then, on March 10, just a couple of weeks from now, we turn our clocks ahead and that will really make the evenings seem longer.
The Cromwell Area Young Old Timers (YOT) met at Cardinal Court Feb. 18 for their regular monthly meeting. It was very cold, snowy and windy, but that didn’t deter the 24 hardy folks that came out and enjoyed the potluck dinner together. There are several new members too, so feel free to join them at their next meeting on March 18 at Cardinal Court.
I also want to congratulate Eleanor Eskuri on having hiked every state park in Minnesota in the past 10 years. She would be a good guest speaker about her travels to all the parks in our state.
Congratulations to our area Bold Women. Feb. 24 has been declared “BOLD WOMEN DAY” in the ELCA churches, so do something Bold for services on Sunday. Maybe it’s a hat, special outfit, or just being yourselves for the day.
I hear that the Village Pump in Tamarack is now open for breakfast and they stay open until 10 p.m. most nights.
