Recently back from a trip to the Grammys, where they were nominated for "Best Bluegrass Album of the Year," Special Consensus will perform at the Encore Performing Arts Center in Cloquet Saturday, March 2, at 7 p.m.
Formed in the Chicago area in 1975, Special Consensus is a four-person acoustic bluegrass band with a repertoire that features traditional bluegrass standards, original compositions by band members and professional songwriters, and songs from other musical genres performed in the bluegrass format. The band has appeared on National Public Radio, The Nashville Network, and the Grand Ole Opry at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn.

Special Consensus has appeared in concert with symphony orchestras nationwide and has brought an informative in-school presentation to schools nationally and internationally since 1984.
Band leader/banjo player Greg Cahill was awarded the prestigious International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Distinguished Achievement Award in 2011. Other band members include guitarist Rick Faris, bass player Dan Eubanks, and Nick Dumas on the mandolin.
The band's 2012 release, "Scratch Gravel Road" (Compass Records) received a Grammy `nomination for Best Bluegrass Album.
"Country Boy: A Bluegrass Tribute to John Denver" received two major IBMA awards in 2014: Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year for "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" and Recorded Event of the Year for "Wild Montana Skies."
Their 18th recording, "Long I Ride," was nominated by the IBMA in 2016 for three awards and was awarded Instrumental Recorded Event of the Year for "Fireball."
"Rivers and Roads," the band's 19th recording, was nominated for the 2018 Best Bluegrass Album Grammy award, received five 2018 IBMA nominations, and was awarded Album of the Year. The single "Squirrel Hunters" was named Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year.
The County Seat Theater Company is located in the Encore Performing Arts Center, at 2035 Hwy 33 South (on Frontage Road) in Cloquet. This nonprofit theater offers a full season of local performances, as well as youth productions, musical acts and has an art gallery featuring works by local artists.
