Carlton happenings

The Inter-Faith Care Center has been part of the City of Carlton for several decades, and recently received a two-year grant for $300,000 from the Minnesota Department of Health. The grant, “Improving Residents Lives through Meaningful Activities,” will help Inter-Faith provide direct care for the mental health, psychosocial, physical and spiritual well-being of the residents. The grant will help to increase staff time to 98 1/2 hours per week in the activities department, and Cedar and Oak Units, providing staff consistency from sunrise (7 a.m.) to sunset (8 p.m.). The increase will also help all other staff meet the holistic needs of the residents of all three units, including the Birch memory care unit. In the second year of the grant, the plan is to also hire a chaplain. Congratulations to Inter-Faith for receiving this grant.

As I sat talking to Roxanne Hedlund, I noticed that her title had changed to Life Enrichment Services Director. She explained that the name change resulted from the activities department encompassing more than just activities, to include the holistic well-being of each resident. She explained that the name was chosen by nursing home residents, staff and their families through a four-week contest. There were 73 entries and a prize for the winner.

The Robert Rodd Memorial Scholarship Hockey Costume Game fundraiser was successful again this year. It was 10 years in the making, and the support from businesses and community members has been greatly appreciated. The event was great fun with raffles, silent auction, kids’ shootout, pictures on the Zamboni, good food and a fun hockey game for all to enjoy. The winners of the Zamboni Bob Coloring Contest were Allie J., sixth grade; Waylan, kindergarten; Gabe W., kindergarten; and Ava W., second grade.
