The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa will host a “We Are Water MN” exhibit in partnership with the Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth, starting with a kickoff event 1-4 p.m. Sunday, which will include an opening ceremony, a puppet show and a play by the Ikidowin Youth Theater Ensemble.
We Are Water MN is a traveling exhibition and community engagement initiative. It is also a partnership among state agencies and host sites, formed to tell Minnesota’s water stories collaboratively, bringing together personal narratives, historical materials, and scientific information.
The exhibit itself consists of 15-some elements. The exhibit includes information panels about the band’s many environmental efforts, included restoration of wild rice and lake sturgeon in the upper St. Louis River. Another piece invites attendees to pin a location and share a water story relating to that location. It also includes audio interviews with FDL Band members, along with additional information about treaties, and why they are important in terms of environmental rights, among other things.
Tribal members and their party will receive free admission to the Aquarium, as long as at least one person in the party presents their Tribal ID to the front desk attendant.
The exhibit runs through April 22. Great Lakes Aquarium is located at 353 Harbor Drive, near the DECC.
