CMH diabetes education program recognized

The diabetes education program at Community Memorial Hospital has received continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The CMH diabetes program offers high quality educational services to area patients with diabetes, regardless of the type of diabetes or onset.

The ADA recognition effort is a voluntary process which ensures that approved education programs have met the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. To receive this recognition, the staff must be knowledgeable health professionals who can provide state-of-the-art information about diabetes management for participants. The diabetes education program at CMH has been certified since 2005 and includes a registered nurse and registered dietitian, who are both certified Diabetes Educators.

“The process of obtaining certification gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of services they provide,” said Mary Kay Marciniak, director of diabetes education at CMH. “And it assures our community and patients that they are receiving the highest quality and service.”

According to the ADA, there are 30.3 million people or 9.4 percent of the population in the United States who have diabetes. While an estimated 23.1 million have been diagnosed, 7.2 million people are not aware that they have this disease.

Every year an estimated 19,000 people in Minnesota are diagnosed with diabetes. Many will first learn that they have diabetes when they are treated for one of its life-threatening complications: heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, nerve disease, and amputations.

“Diabetes is a prevalent disease in our community, state and across the nation,” Marciniak said. “But it is a manageable disease.”
