A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news
As I type this week’s news, I am in a hotel in Alexandra, Va. I have been on a 10-day trip to Washington, D.C. with my son and grandson. We have seen most of the important monuments and memorials and are on our way home tomorrow. We were able to spend a lot of quality time together sharing the experiences of D.C.
First, we stopped at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Penn., then on to our motel for the night in Bedford, Pa. We stopped at Gettysburg for a wonderful tour of the museum and the battlefield.
Our first full day in D.C. was spent visiting the Lincoln, Vietnam, World War II and Korean War memorials. In the next few days we visited Christ Church and Mount Vernon, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Smithsonian, National Cathedral, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Capitol building and, of course, Arlington National Cemetery and the changing of the guard there. Field after field of white burial markers identify the graves of more than 400,000 men and women who rest there. We were there on a Sunday, when no burials are conducted, and learned that an average of 25 burials take place in Arlington every day.
Best of all, the cherry blossoms were right at their peak with glorious sunshine all day.
We had a step-on guide for the entire four days in D.C., which really helped all 46 of us on our Home Spun Tour get a feel for the city and all its history. We were to visit the Wright Patterson Air and Space Museum Tuesday, planning on being home Wednesday. All in all, spending time with my son and grandson was priceless.
On the way home, there was a truck that overturned on the highway ahead of us. There was debris all over the place. Then we found out it was filled with Vicks VapoRub. And amazingly, there was no congestion for the next eight hours.
(Happy April Fools’ Day!)

That’s all the news from the Edge of Wright.
