Obituary: Sylvia I. Kempas

Sylvia I. Kempas, 102, passed away Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019 at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton, Minn.

She was born Oct. 9, 1916 in Chicago, Ill. to Otto and Sofie (Tammi) Kempas. Sylvia grew up in Floodwood, Minn. and took nurse's training and attended Bible School in Chicago. In 1951, she was joined by Geraldine Tornfelt and together they worked as missionaries for the American Indian Crusade. They ministered in Wisconsin, South Dakota and Colorado. In 1984 they returned to Atkinson, ministering at Sawyer Chapel once again. Sylvia was a member of Journey Christian Church in Cloquet and was actively involved in ministry there as well.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her brother Bob Kempas and her sister Ellen Leep.

She is survived by her nephew Dick (Peggy) Balga, and her niece Kathy (Hank) Wierzbicki.

Visitation: 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Friday, April 26 at the Journey Christian Church, followed by a luncheon in the church social hall.

Memorials are preferred to Journey Christian Church.
