Fittingly named, the Esko Vortex track meet was held April 16 at the Esko Sports Center. Many of the local schools participated in one of their first outdoor meets of the year and there were plenty of big results.
On the girls side, Zoie Johnson of Esko won the shot put with a toss of 33 feet, 6 inches. She followed up with a second-place effort in the discus with a throw of 101 feet, behind South Ridge-Cherry-Northwoods-Northeast Range sophomore Elle Ridge, who had a throw of 103-5.
Floodwood's Hailey Bergin scored double individual honors by taking both the long jump and the 100-meter hurdles. Bergin won the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 8.5 inches in a narrow win over South Ridge's Taylor Mejdrich. Bergin won the 100 hurdles in 18.20 seconds, edging out Carlton's Ella Palmer, who came in second in 18.40.
Alexis Thompson of Carlton was the winner of the 300 hurdles with a time of 53.40 - nearly a full second faster than Kenna Ridge of South Ridge.
Ayisha Adamu of Esko nabbed first place in the triple jump with a leap of 29-1.
Second-place finishes went to Emily Rengo of Esko in the 100-meter dash, Kelli Granquist of Moose Lake-Willow River in the 800, Orie Randall of Esko in the pole vault, and Jillian Sajdak of South Ridge in the 1600.
In the relay events, it was Esko and South Ridge finishing first and second, respectively, in the 4x100, Carlton and Esko finishing one and two in the 4x200, and Esko winning the 4x400 with South Ridge placing second.
No team scores were kept in the meet.
On the boys side of the meet, Ian Sherman of South Ridge took first in the high jump with a leap of 5-8, and 18-5 ½ in the long jump to place second.
South Ridge also got a first place from Deekon Anvid, who won the discus with a toss of 112-7, nearly 3 feet better than that of teammate Jayton Nelson. Nelson was also second in the shot put, with South Ridge teammate Matt Kilbourn winning with an effort of 42-2.
Esko went first and second in the pole vault, with Michael Urie taking first with a vault of 7 feet, 6 inches and Nick Swedberg taking second with a vault of 6-6.
Floodwood's Wyatt Rauvola won the 1600 in a time of 4:46.80 and also finished second in the 800 with a time of 2:05.20.
Esko's Dylan Edland won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.30, two seconds better than Nate Jungers of Moose Lake-Willow River. Edland took second in the 110 hurdles.
Second-place finishes went to Grand Petit of ML-WR in the 400, Jack Riley of Wrenshall in the 3200 and Duane Broughton of ML-WR in the triple jump.
Esko took first in the 4x100 relay with South Ridge taking second. Esko finished second in the 4x800, and Moose Lake-Willow River took first and second in the 4x400, with the two Rebels teams finishing a split-second apart.
