It’s been a feast-or-famine type of week for the Lumberjacks softball team. Averaging more than 10 runs per game, the team faced a scoring famine when beaten by Hermantown 6-0 last Friday, then feasted on Ashland, pitching to the tune of 24 runs in just four innings of play. As the home team, Cloquet actually scored 24 runs in three at-bats as the game ended on a mercy rule after the top of the fourth inning.

Cloquet-0
A much anticipated softball matchup between two teams who are expected to vie for the Section 7AAA championship saw the Hawks bash three home runs in taking the home win. Alana Mayry fired a complete game one-hitter with the lone hit for Cloquet coming off the bat of Brynne Martin. Cloquet pitcher Lucy Sinkkonen took the loss on the mound while giving up nine hits and striking out eight.
“It was our best competition of the year and we faced our first good pitcher of the year, so it was a good test for us,” said Cloquet coach Ron Tondryk. “We came out a little flat and that showed in our lack of discipline at the plate as we were swinging at bad pitches.”

Ashland-2
Playing at home on a frigid Tuesday night with light snow falling, the Lumberjacks rebounded from their Friday loss by mauling the Oredockers in just four innings. Jose Steen didn’t allow a hit in her two innings on the pitching rubber and picked up five strikeouts.
“Ashland is having a down year and we got on them early by building an 18-0 lead,” mentioned coach Tondryk. “This gave us a chance to play most of the younger girls. Josie pitched well and Amanda Paul came in and gave up three hits and also struck out five.”
At the plate the ‘Jacks provided plenty of offense with Olivia Diver picking up two hits and two RBIs as well as scoring a pair of runs. Allie Wojtysiak also had two hits and two RBIs and added a double in the process. Brenna McClarey chipped in with a big night of two hits and four RBIs and Brea Rasmussen added a couple of hits with an RBI and two runs scored.
