A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news
It seems that this column is made up of mostly area announcements, but that’s just the way it is. There are just so many things going on in our area and many folks have taken the time to thank me for putting these activities in the column so they don’t miss out on the ones they enjoy taking part in. You would think that there isn’t much to do in a small town, but you would be wrong. Because we are a small-town area, members of our community seem to keep busy helping each other and participating in our events. The school and churches also certainly provide us with many activities, so as long as we can take part, we will.
I just got word that Bob Schultz is in St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. He had a bad fall at home May 11, which punctured his right lung and broke two or three ribs. He will be there for a few days for sure, and hopefully can recover quickly. Get well, Bob. Your cribbage partners miss you already.
Lawrence Line also is in St. Luke’s with heart issues. “Get well” wishes go out to him too.
The Cromwell High School Class of 1961 will be holding its yearly class reunion and luncheon at the Black Bear Seven Fires Steakhouse restaurant July 17 at 11:30 a.m. Please pass the word to those who may not get this announcement in the newspaper.
Nate Johnson gave the sermon on Sunday at both Bethlehem and Bethany Lutheran Churches. Nate and his wife Erin (Suhonen) and their three sons were at Doug and Bonnie Suhonen’s for Mother’s Day weekend. Thanks, Nate, it was great.

Congratulations to all Envirothon teams. You represented your school well at the 25th Annual Area III Envirothon held May 6 at the Cloquet Forestry Center. Great job to Team 1, including Cheyenne Smith, Amber Collman, Lacie Zoeller, Emmalee Hoover, and Micah Pocernich, who are going on to the state Envirothon Monday, May 20. They placed third out of 23 teams with a score of 114.5, with the second-place winners achieving a 115. We are proud of you. With the Envirothon team heading to State, we will have a bake sale and raffle during the concert next week. Bring some cash and pick up some goodies to help the team. Thank you, from Mrs. Wester.

Bethlehem Lutheran’s annual mother-daughter tea and luncheon at the church May 11 was a big success. There were more than 45 mothers and daughters in attendance and they all thoroughly enjoyed the special music by Hear By Faith. The women of Bethlehem also served a delicious luncheon and were able to use their brand-new white tablecloths for the first time. The oldest mother in attendance was 95-year-old Harriet Reno, Bonnie Goerts’ mom; and the youngest daughter was 10-day-old Ariahlyn Goodin, daughter of Suzy Goodin. So all in all, it was a great afternoon for those able to attend.
Graduating seniors in the community will be honored Sunday, May 19 at Bethany Lutheran Church at the 10:30 a.m. worship service. Plan to stay for fellowship.
The Bethany-Bethlehem memorial committee will hold a memorial service at the Villa Vista on Monday, May 20 at 10 a.m. for the residents who have passed away recently. Community members are encouraged to attend.
Then, on Tuesday, May 21 at 9:30 a.m., the Villa Vista/Cardinal Court is honoring all the area volunteers who so faithfully participate in activities week after week by entertaining the residents or helping is so many various ways. Thank you, volunteers, and a big thank-you to the owners of the VV/CC for giving our community such a wonderful place for our family and friends to live out their golden years.
The Cromwell area variety show and silent auction will be held Friday, June 28 at the Cromwell Park Pavilion. The Cromwell Area Community Club is inviting contributions for its silent auction of one-of-a-kind artworks — items you’ve designed and made yourself for this fourth annual event. Also seeking musicians, singers, dancers, comedians, and readers — any kind of performance that delights — for the variety show following the steak fry. Please call or email Ann Markusen, 218-428-3300 or [email protected] to join.

Our sympathy to the family of Jerry Haller, 85, of Barnum who passed away May 2. Jerry spent countless hours entertaining folks all over the area with his energetic, toe-tapping music and he was especially appreciated at the Villa Vista for his years and years of entertainment there. There will be a gathering of his friends and family 1-5 p.m. Saturday, May 18 at the Barnum Senior Center, Barnum.
The Cardinal Court activity room at the Villa Vista is available for family functions, but the staff must know ahead of time and put your event on the main calendar. It takes some time to have the room ready and it also needs cleaning after your event, so if you would like to use the room, please call Julie Hedin at 644-3331.
The students from the Cromwell-Wright School who attended prom this year made a stop at the Cardinal Court to show off their beautiful dresses and tuxes before going to prom. The residents surely enjoy this grand march and there were lots of oohs and ayahs to go around.
May 20 is the last time this year that the Foster Grandchildren from Mrs. Koenig’s fourth grade meet with the residents at the Cardinal Court/Villa Vista. These fine youngsters go there once a month. At the beginning of the year, they are paired up with a resident at the home. This program was started 26 years ago in the fall of 1993 when I was the fourth-grade teacher and it continues to this day. The residents and I are so thankful that the kids can still meet with their foster grandparents, and it helps all of them appreciate their elders.
