The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls golf team has not participated in many meets this spring but they are growing into the game, now that the weather is cooperating.
Last week the Lady ’Jacks competed in the Lake Superior Conference meet in Cloquet. While only Hermantown and CEC had enough participants on the girls’ side, head coach Matt Carlson said it was a great learning experience.
“We have 15 girls out for this year’s team, which is the most it has been in years,” Carlson said. “We are very young — it should only get better in the future.”
Avery Carlson and Juli Steinart played in both of the nine-hole events at Cloquet. Steinart finished best for the Lumberjacks with a 62-51, while Carlson shot rounds of 66 and 54.
Kate Owens shot a 56 in her nine holes, and Mireye Moose shot a 63. The second nine saw Alisha Broneak card a 57 and Abby Steinart ending with a 56.
On Monday the girls took third place at Giants Ridge in the 11-team tournament. Eveleth-Gilbert won the girls team event and Hermantown placed second overall.
Cloquet-Esko-Carlton’s Avery Carlson shot 98 on the girls’ side and finished eighth overall.
“It was the first time we had a golfer break 100 this season,” Carlson said. “We have so many young talented girls — they are only getting better.
“Juli and Abby Steinart have been playing very well for us this year as well, and again like a lot of our team, these two seventh-grade twins are making an impact in the meets they have played in,” he said.
The girls golf team played in the Lake Superior Conference meet Wednesday. They play Friday at Ridgeview in Duluth, before the Cloquet Invitational Wednesday, May 22.
