Robotics teams take on Detroit

Robotics teams from Cloquet and Esko got a taste of the big stage spotlight in Detroit in late April during the FIRST Championship.

FIRST, an acronym for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology" was a new experience for Cloquet students this year.

Ripsaw Robotics coach Cameron Lindner said he is excited to see where things will go after the inaugural season. "We need to focus on ... finding mentors for the next season."

That means the team will be looking for adults with skills to help guide the students.

It was a whirlwind season, Lindner said.

"The team made friends from so many other places around the world, such as a team from South Africa," he said. "This was such a big learning experience for everyone, just by us finding what we like to do on the team versus what we don't like doing on the team. I can't wait for next season."

Esko has a veteran team with plenty of mentoring. SubZero Robotics coach Laura Zimny echoed the thrill of competing at the championships, even if the results were less than ideal. The team helped Cloquet students along in the process this season.

"We had a blast at Championships," the team blogged from Detroit. Members said they "grew a lot as a team" this season.
