Lumberjacks dominate Lake Conference meet

The Cloquet boys and girls track teams ran away with the Lake Superior Conference titles May 14, in Superior. The Lumberjacks boys took first place with 192.50 points with Denfeld finishing a distant second with 129.50. The Cloquet girls team easily outdistanced second-place Hermantown, outscoring the Hawks 201.50 to 153.50.

On the girls side, sisters Kendra Kelley and Katelyn Kelley went 1-2 in the 100-meter dash with Kendra winning in a time of 12.94 and Kaitlyn finishing in a time of 13.24.

Alexa Snesrud of Cloquet took first in both the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. Snesrud also was part of the first place 4x200-meter relay team along with Sydney Wick, Addison Loeb and Katelyn Kelley who ran a time of 1:51.56, more than two seconds ahead of the second-place Proctor team.

"Alexa is a great athlete," said Cloquet head track coach Tim Prosen of the eighth-grader. "She is another future rock-solid athlete for our program."

Freshman Olivia Jameson had a strong day by winning the 100-

meter hurdles, taking third in the 300-meter hurdles and by winning both the high jump and the triple jump. Her high jump of 5-4 tied the Lake Superior Conference meet record.

"Olivia continues to impress us. She works hard and has so much fun out there and she is always smiling," Prosen said.

Cloquet finished 1-2 in the shot put and the discus with Makayla Suominen winning over her swimming teammate Maddie Dostel in both events.

Caley Kruse and Sadie Senich also helped gain points by taking third and fourth place, respectively, in the 800-meter run.

Harmony Tracy was fourth and Lauren Cawcutt fifth in the 1,600. Cawcutt was also fifth in the 3,200-meter run. Kelly Lorenz was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles and Kruse was fifth in the high jump, while Katie Turner was fourth in both the long jump and the triple jump.

Cloquet's 4x100 relay team also took second, as did Ilei Benson who was second in the pole vault.

On the boys side Jordan Allen had a great day by taking first in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

"Jordan is all hard work," Prosen said. "Arne Mijala has done a great job of training him. Jordan is the last to leave practice every day and he is such a leader through example."

The boys 4x400 relay team consisting of Riley Leslie, Alex Leuzzo, Nathan Genereau and Blaine Bong also took first place.

Logan Dushkin won the 800-meter run.

Alex Leuzzo also had an impressive day. To go along with his first place finish in the 4x400 relay, he was also second in the long jump, triple jump and 300-meter hurdles. Leslie was also fourth in the triple jump.

"Alex is such an athlete and is so well rounded," Prosen said. "He has been one of the top consistent point scorers of our team since his sophomore year. He will graduate but he has left a legacy through his leadership and other athletes looking up to him."

Cody Tibbets was second in the discus and fourth in the shot put.

In the boys high jump, Dylan Heehn was second, while the 4x800 relay team was second behind the winning Denfeld team.

With the depth of this years team the Lumberjacks were looking forward to the Section 7 meet this week.
