Although Carlton High School graduation has come and gone as with other area schools, I thought it might be interesting to visit the Carlton County Historical Society for a look at the history of Carlton High School.
From the Carlton County Historical Society:
The Carlton school located in the county seat was destroyed by fire three times. The first two schools were wooden structures, and fire equipment and access to water to fight the fires was limited. The second school was built in the 1890s and was destroyed by fire in 1895.
The third structure was made of brick, but in February 1915 the school building was destroyed by fire. An investigation determined that the fire may have been caused by defective wiring in the basement. The fire was discovered early in the morning by the janitor on a Tuesday morning. The school was being fumigated by formaldehyde as a response to a scarlet fever scare. The fumes made fighting the fire difficult, and nothing could be saved because of the dense fumes.
A new school was built, and was ready for students by January 1916. The first floor of the school is still being used today, although there have been many changes over the years. A new addition was dedicated Sept. 22, 1954, and again in 1969.
The Carlton School was started Sept. 18, 1871, as District 2. At that time there were several school districts in Carlton County, and there was one superintendent overseeing the whole county. As time passed some of the smaller districts dissolved and students came to Carlton. In 1957 Carlton received a new designation as District 93, which we still are today.
As you can see, there have been many graduations over the years, with some of the classes small and others quite large. But each graduation ceremony is important to each and every graduate. It is the next step to a successful future, whether one continues on to college, technical school or enters the workforce. Congratulations to the Class of 2019.
The 10th annual Carlton Clean Up was Friday, May 17. This year 200 students and 25 staff from Carlton High School and two community volunteers raked yards, cleaned up brush and bagged leaves and debris from 18 yards and Hillside Cemetery. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this event a success.
