A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news
Well, school is out again for another year! It seems that the older we get the faster the years go by. We can be so proud of our area youth as they graduate from high school and go on to further education, the military or employment. Also, congratulations to our area college graduates. If you have any graduates to congratulate, please let me know so I can include them in this column.
Congratulations to Jenifer Nieman Johnson for getting her master’s degree in educational leadership recently. She is the daughter of former Pastor Ed and Gayle Nieman.
I was honored to attend several graduation parties this past weekend. The families sure do a fantastic job of putting on these parties for their kids. It’s hard to believe all our high school seniors’ accomplishments. Makes one wonder when they had time to do all these great things?
We have all gotten those “Save the Date” cards in the mail and now I have a date for any of the former Diamond Match employees to remember: There will be a picnic for all former employees of Diamond Brands (and any of the other names that the company went under) on Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Esko Park, just north of the junction of Highway 61 and County Road 1. I think it will be potluck, but will have more details later, so pass it along so everyone gets the word.
The Farmers Co-op in Wright celebrated its 100th anniversary Saturday, June 1. Many of the area folks came to share their memories of the co-op over the years and have a bite to eat. The store was established June 3, 1919! I will try to have the winners and the answers to the co-op trivia contest in next week’s news article. Remember, the co-op has new summer hours: 8am-6pm Monday-Thursday, 8am-8pm Friday and Saturday, and 9am-5pm Sunday. For a full story on the history of the co-op, check out the May 31 Pine Knot News from last week. Jana Peterson did a great job of covering this historical milestone.
Now, I’m asking for your memories stories of our co-op. Please write them down and send them to me via the U.S. mail or email. Here’s one of mine, for example: “I remember that my dad would always take us kids to the Co-op store in Wright on Christmas Eve Day so my mom could finish up the Christmas plans at home without interruptions. It’s one of my best memories of my dad, because he rarely took us anywhere without our mom! I even got an extra present once in a while when my dad took us shopping there. I still have one of the toy cowboy horse and riders purchased at the old store across from the old feed mill on one of those trips to the Co-op.” So, if you have any stories to share, please do! And thank you to all those who came and to the employees for their extra efforts in making this anniversary so special!

Wrong Days in Wright is looking for the next queen and king! Any elementary student interested in selling buttons, participating in coronation and riding in the parade on Saturday, July 20, please call Faith Nyberg at 701-388- 9065.
With that in mind, the new Wrong Days in Wright buttons are here! They will be available at area businesses and hopefully by the candidates that will be running for king and queen. This year is the 54th annual W-Ds event and the buttons feature the first moon landing, which was exactly 50 years ago on July 20, 1969. Check them out, they are really nice. Still only $1, and there will be lots of prize drawings if you have a button.
Save the date for the 9th annual Kaleb Anderson Memorial 5K Family Fun Run/Walk, Saturday, July 6, 2019.
Carlton County Retired Educators (CCRE) will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, location to be determined. There are more than 400 retired educators in Carlton County and they are invited to join CCRE.
As I conclude this week’s news article, I am also into my 51st year of educating students in the Cromwell-Wright School. It’s a pretty significant year for me because I also started going to school myself in 1951 at the age of 6. So, this year is my 51-51 year! Just a neat bit personal of trivia.
That’s all the news from The Edge of Wright. Have a great week and enjoy a good book with your kids, or yourself.
