Sue Brown Chapin has been teaching watercolor classes in Carlton County for more than 10 years. This week she brought her lessons to the shores of Lac La Belle at the Historic Scott House for a series of one-day classes on the basics of watercolor process.

Chapin grew up in an artistic household. Her mother, Betty Brown, was a beloved artist in Carlton County. In 2006 she started painting and fell in love with the watercolor medium. She is very active in the arts and is a member of the Arrowhead Art Club and president of Artists of Minnesota.

When asked about her drive to teach, Chapin shared that the energy she gets from the students is a great motivator for her own practice. “I always learn something new from my students.”

The location offers ample subject matter. The windows of the coach house face the lake, and many of the workshop students comment on what a great setting it is for art. “I am inspired by rugged beauty,” says Chapin, “and Jim [Sheets] is such a great host — it really is a perfect spot.”

Chapin will be opening a studio, Gallery of 4th, in the Cloquet Presbyterian Church this month and will host an open house June 28 and 29.
