On June 4, at the noon meeting of the Cloquet Rotary Club, scholarships were awarded to six area high school seniors. Five $1000 scholarships were awarded to Scott Rousseau of Carlton; Annika Wold of Esko; and Kelly Lorenz, Claire Taubman, and Logan Gallup of Cloquet. A $1500 Henry Walter Scholarship was awarded to Abby Johnson of Cloquet. To be eligible, scholarship recipients must attend four Rotary meetings, give a brief presentation to the club, participate in Rotary service projects, and complete an application, including an essay. Scholarship winners must demonstrate outstanding leadership, academic excellence, community service and good citizenship.
The Rotary Henry Walter Scholarship program was established by Henry Walter, a prominent local businessman, philanthropist, and Rotary member for 57 years. He spent 39 years with the former Conwed Corporation (now USG) as an engineer, manufacturing executive, president, and CEO. Henry was a founder of the Carlton County Historical Society, served as chairman of the Cloquet school board for 14 years, and was active in Boy Scouts, Masonic Lodge, AAD Shrine, and the Arrowhead Art Club.
