A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news
Last week we spent a lot of time with our son, as he took a week off before starting a new job. On Monday we took a North Shore Scenic Railroad trip up the North Shore past Congdon Park and back. We also enjoyed a cruise on the Vista Star, which took us around the Duluth Harbor. The excursion lasted an hour and 45 minutes and, as it was on a Tuesday, the cost was only $5. Yes, they have $5 Tuesdays, and it is a great experience for those who have never been or haven’t been on the lake for years.
Cromwell’s Class of 1961 will hold its reunion at Black Bear Seven Fires Steakhouse Wednesday, July 17, at 11:30 a.m.
The Bethany-Bethlehem memorial committee will meet July 15 at 10 a.m. at the Villa Vista to pay tribute to residents who passed away in the past couple of months. They spend time singing, remembering, and paying tribute to their friends. Some of the committee members include Pat Cain, Jeanne Hansen, Lois Jobe, Elaine Crouch, Jennie K. Hanson, Siiri Peterson, and Carol Hutar. All area folks are urged to attend or join the committee. Call me.
Bethlehem’s pie sale is 4-7 p.m. Friday, July 19. Feel free to donate pies, as we have fewer and fewer folks who can donate them. Thanks in advance.
There are only a couple of weeks now before the 54th annual Wrong Days in Wright festival. Friday, July 19, is the steak fry, royalty coronation, pie sale, O-G-N-I-B, fireworks, and music in the park. On Saturday, July 20, we have Wrong Days events all day: the parade at 10:30 a.m., kids’ games, vendors, softball tourney, drawings in the park and more; bean bag tourney, live music under the log pavilion at 1 p.m., and a dance that night with Jason Benson’s Band, Loose Change. On Sunday, July 21, the community worship service will be held at the Free Church in Wright at 10 a.m.
Bethany Lutheran Church will be holding vacation bible school 5-7:30 p.m. July 28-31 for kids in preschool through the sixth grade. This is open to all area kids and their families. Call Julie Hedin or the church at 644-3640.
You are invited to attend a special dedication ceremony at the Lakeside Cemetery on Saturday, July 20. Two of the earliest pioneers, Isaak and Maria Walli, will be remembered for their generous donation of land in 1906, to serve as a final resting place for the pioneers, settlers, family and friends of Lakeside and surrounding communities. Isaak Walli perished in the 1918 Fire and rests, along with many others, at the memorial mass grave site in Moose Lake. Maria Walli was buried at Lakeside Cemetery in 1919, exactly 100 years ago this past June 8. We will gather at the Lakeside Cemetery, located two miles south on Finn Road off Highway 210 between Wright and Tamarack, at 2 p.m. to dedicate a memorial plaque and enjoy a brief program. Coffee and bars will be served immediately after at the Lakeside clubhouse. It will be a great time to catch up with neighbors, friends and relatives while we visit and enjoy the accordion music of Steve Solkela.
Community yoga meets one more time this month, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday, July 29 at the Cromwell Pavilion.
As I close this week’s news, I’m mad. Mad? Why would I be mad? Well, as of August, Mad Magazine will no longer publish its bi-monthly magazine and will just reprint from its archives. I have had a subscription to Mad Magazine, off and on, since I was a teenager, and now that my subscription is paid up until 2032, they are no longer going to produce it? I was hoping my subscription would not expire until I expired. Wonder if I can get a refund or just be happy with the stuff they plan to send me instead.
That’s all the news from the Edge of Wright. Get involved and stay happy.
