Three days of activities in and around Carlton promise fun for all
What isn’t happening during this weekend’s Carlton Daze?
There’s running, garage sales, softball, volleyball, crafts, pie baking, kids’ games, music, whitewater kayaking, a parade, a car show, more running, food and drink, horseshoe and bean bag tournaments, more music and more food.
“We’ve always tried to make it really family-oriented,” said Leola Rodd. “We’ve got the 5K, car show, all kinds of things. The parade is the big finale. It’s a pretty big parade and lots of fun. That’s really a big to-do in our community.”
Rodd got started with Carlton Daze when she organized the first 5K race/walk and spaghetti feed, which basically kicks off the three-day event each year.
The fun kicks off Friday with garage sales around town (find maps at area businesses) and a library book and bake sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The spaghetti feeds runs 4-8 p.m. with kids’ fun races at 5 p.m. and the 5K race starting at 6 p.m. There’s music at Third Base Bar and the VFW, starting at 9 p.m. Friday.
On Saturday, the “ultra” serious runners take off at 6 a.m. from Carlton High School in the 50-mile Minnesota Voyageur Trail Race to Duluth and back. Spectators can catch runners and whitewater kayak fun at Jay Cooke Park most of the day. Find the pie baking contest at Thrivent Financial on Chestnut 9-11 a.m. The car show runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. downtown, plus there’s Bingo at the VFW, a horseshoe tournament at the VFW, a bean bag tournament on Chestnut Avenue and more music that night.
On Sunday, there are services at various churches, food and drink at the Magnolia Café, more paddlemania on the St. Louis River and the parade at 1 p.m. down Chestnut Avenue. More fun follows with root beer floats at the Carlton fire department and a pedal tractor pull at the bike shelter. Another bean bag tournament starts at 2:30 p.m. at the VFW (along with raffles) and there’s more music again at the VFW and Third Base Bar.
