Wright-Cromwell news

Congratulations to Barb Dahl and Oscar Eliason who will be honored on Friday, Aug. 16 at 12 p.m. in the Log Pavilion at the Carlton County Fair, as they have been named the 2019 Female and Male Outstanding Senior citizens of Carlton County. Barb and Oscar are both from the Cromwell area and surely deserve this honor.

The county fair books are available at the Northview Bank in Cromwell as well as many other area businesses in the county.

A memorial service will be held for Steve Krogh on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Cromwell United Methodist Church, with visitation one hour before the service.

Our sympathies to family and friends of longtime Cromwell resident Dick Anderson, 89, who passed away Aug. 13. Visitation is at 3 p.m. until the 4 p.m. funeral service Sunday, Aug. 18 at Bethany in Cromwell.

Our sympathies to the family of Beth Swanson (née Houck), 62, of Roseville, who died on Aug. 8 from pancreatic cancer. Services were scheduled for Aug. 15 in Roseville. Memorials may be made to Children's Minnesota neonatal program: www.

childrens mn.org/give.

Our sympathies also to the family of Elie Yang, 36, of Brooklyn Center, who died Aug. 4 while driving an ATV in his family's driveway on South Finn Road in Lakeview Township.

Ann Heikkila announced that the American Legion News Convention was held in Wilmar. Trophies and awards were handed out. The Employer of Veterans Award for medium-sized businesses went to Lake Country Power in Grand Rapids. The new Auxiliary commander is Mary Hendrickson of Cloquet. Commanders pick their own projects for the year and her first choice is to purchase two used golf carts for Veterans on the Lake, near Ely. The second project is to raise contributions to purchase a retractable awning for the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay bus that veterans take for day trips. Congratulations to our local recipients. The Auxiliary theme: Remember, and Honor, Serve; and the symbol is the poppy, a flower sacred to our entire Legion family. Donations can be sent to Ann Heikkila at PO Box 112, Wright MN 55798; or, if you have a used golf cart to donate, just let her know and she will make sure it gets to the proper place. Thank you in advance, as we can never do enough for our veterans.

Congratulations to Logan Hart and Emelia Dahl, who participated in the Youth 2K race on Friday at Catfish Days in Floodwood. Emelia took first place, and Logan took second in the girls' division.

Several area folks attended the August TRIAD meeting at the Moose Lake Police Department Aug. 7. Chief Bryce Bogenholm reported that more than 500 people attended the National Night Out in Moose Lake. More than 2,000 came out in Cloquet. It is so good to meet our police and firefighters on a less stressful occasion than during an emergency situation.

There will be community yoga 11 a.m.-noon the last two Mondays in August, so get ready to stretch and meet at the Cromwell Pavilion Aug. 19 and 26.

The Prairie Lake Township picnic will be held Aug. 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Prairie Lake Townhall, 3693 Jones Road, on the corner of Jones and Graff roads. Burgers, brats, dogs, buns, chips, condiments, pop, water and coffee will be provided, but feel free to bring a dish to pass.

The next YOT Senior Dance will be held on Thursday, Aug. 22 at the Cromwell Park Pavilion 1-4 p.m. with music by Florian Chmielewski. A potluck lunch will be served at 2:30 or so.

The 58th Lakehead Harvest Show will be held Friday-Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. the weekend of Aug. 23-25, at 70 E. St. Louis River Road in Esko. Daily admission is $7, or $13 for all three days, and children 11 and under are admitted for free.

Also taking place on the same weekend of Aug. 23-25 is the Savanna Portage Rendezvous Encampment at the pavilion park in Floodwood, so just follow the signs off Main Street. This free event is fun for the whole family and includes the hawk and knife throw, Saturday night dance and much more.

As I close this news column I am missing my parents, Wallace and Katharine Dahlman, who were married 80 years ago on Aug. 16, 1939. They are both gone now, but hope they know we still have fond memories of them.

It was also 80 years ago, on Aug. 18, 1939, that Marcella (Dahl) Lindeman wrote a letter to Cromwell school superintendent, J. R. Hokee, informing him that she had elected to take the home economics teaching position at the school. She arrived in Cromwell by train from Kelso, N.D., and thus began a long teaching career in Cromwell. Had she not accepted this position 80 years ago, I wonder how different the Arnold Dahl family would have been? You may ask how I know this information. Well, I have a copy of her letter of acceptance that I got from the school several years ago when they were cleaning out old records. I gave the original to the Dahl family.

That all the news from the Edge of Wright. Have a great couple of weeks before school resumes on Sept. 3.
