Suspicious couple leads to meth arrest

A Pequot Lakes man was arrested early Saturday on charges of possession of methamphetamine.

Brandon James Salgy, 34, was charged Monday, Aug. 12, with first-degree possession of drugs in Sixth District Carlton County Court.

According to the criminal complaint:

Fond du Lac police officer Nils Hansen spotted a male and female walking on the Black Bear Casino floor wearing backpacks, which is against policy, and told casino security, which made contact with the two. Security then advised Hansen that they thought the woman was trespassing so Hansen returned to his patrol car to find her history, and discovered she had an active Carlton County warrant.

The two left the casino, getting into a car that pulled up. Hansen followed them.

Noticing at least three vehicle violations and some suspicious behavior, Hansen pulled the car over.

Salgy was a passenger in the vehicle. Both he and the other passenger, his companion at the casino, said their vehicle had broken down and they’d gotten a ride to the casino, but couldn’t say who was with them, where they were or where they came from.

During the conversation, Hansen observed that Salgy appeared to be trying to hide plastic wrap with possible marijuana residue under his foot, and that he had a black backpack tucked under his legs. When Hansen searched the vehicle, he found a pill bottle with three hypodermic needles, empty baggies and a spoon with a powdery residue on it inside a purse belonging to the driver, Nicole Joy Goodell.

Hansen found a zipper bag containing a substance that later tested positive for methamphetamine at a field weight of 56.30 grams.

Salgy’s next court appearance is set for Aug. 28.

There was no report of the women being arrested.
