Cloquet police blotter

Following is a very brief overview of Cloquet police calls from Aug. 2-18, provided by the Cloquet Police Department:

Aug. 2

Officers responded to the 1700 block of Sahlman Avenue for a report of a possible abduction of an 11-year-old. Officers spoke with the child and later began canvassing the area for a suspect but were unable to locate anyone or any vehicles matching the description of the suspect. Officers then obtained video footage of the area where the alleged abduction attempt took place. The video did not show any attempted abduction and did not support the information told to the officers. The call was closed as unfounded.

Aug. 4

On routine patrol, officers noticed a man walking who appeared to conceal his identity. Officers recognized the man and learned he had two warrants. He was arrested without incident.

Aug. 7

Cloquet officers assisted Fond du Lac officers with processing a DWI arrest. Fond du Lac officers responded to a traffic complaint and learned the driver was intoxicated.

Officers thought they saw a possible domestic dispute taking place. Through investigation, they learned that the argument was all verbal and nothing physical had taken place. One person had a warrant out of St. Louis County. He tried to leave the residence but was arrested in the backyard. He was sent to Carlton County Jail (CCJ).

Aug. 10

Officers were requested to attempt to pick up an individual that was believed to be in the Cloquet area with warrants out of Nebraska. The man was located in his vehicle near Veterans Park and was booked into the Carlton County jail on his out-of-state warrants.

Later that night, officers responded to a local bar for a report of a man being belligerent. Upon arrival, officers learned the man had been asked to leave several times and refused. The man was then instructed by officers to leave and was uncooperative. The man was placed into custody and lodged at the CCJ.

Aug. 11

Officers responded to a local business for a report of a possible intoxicated driver at the drive-thru. Officers located the vehicle and witnessed the driver cross the center line multiple times and not able to maintain a proper speed. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver admitted to drinking, but much earlier in the evening. After performing the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and submitting to a portable breath test, the driver was arrested and lodged at the CCJ.

Officers responded to a report of suspicious activity at the Park and Ride in Scanlon. Officers met the reporting party at Kwik Trip for more information about the initial call. While talking to the reporter, officers were having a tough time obtaining accurate information for her. She then got in a vehicle and left. Officers followed her to a nearby residence and learned her license was revoked, and she had given them a false name. The woman was taken into custody and lodged at the CCJ.

Officers conducted a traffic stop for a driver they recognized who did not have a valid license. The driver was cited for driving after revocation. Officers then learned the passenger in the vehicle had a “no-bail” warrant out of Carlton County. She was arrested without incident.

Aug. 12

While on routine patrol that morning, officers saw a small group of people walking toward Northwoods Arena. Officers stopped the individuals as it was too early for the business to be open. One of the men in the group had a Carlton County warrant; he was arrested without incident.

Aug. 13

Officers responded to a report of a suspicious person at a local laundromat. The individual was wearing a mask and hood, and it was startling people. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the man. He understood why people would be alarmed as he has no reason to wear a mask in the middle of the summer. Officers knew the man to have a warrant and placed him under arrest. During a search of his person, officers located multiple items of contraband and charged him for those items as well.

So far this month, Cloquet officers have been involved in 426 incidents that include traffic violations, thefts, domestic assaults, damage to property, and other calls for service.
