A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news
With just days until school starts, the summer is almost over. But let’s hope there are many more great fall days to come before we have to deal with cold weather.
I was able to attend the Aug. 21 Cromwell council meeting, at which MnDOT project manager Josie Olson explained why the Highway 210 and Highway 73 project is being delayed until 2021: the City of Cromwell did not approve the roundabout, so it will now take longer to revise the project plans, the project is expected to take longer than planned, and MnDOT doesn’t want to do the project over two summers, so now will plan to complete it in one season, namely 2021. If you want more information, talk to your city council members or the mayor.
I just learned that Brandon Burns is now flying a 747 for UPS out of Alaska. He is still in the Air National Guard, and he and his wife are expecting a second daughter, Charlotte Ann, in 2020.
It was great to have Judy VonDeLinde in our area; she says her granddaughter Kelsey Koupal is in the Army National Guard and is on a full scholarship at the University of South Dakota. She is the only female combat engineer in her unit too.
After four days at the county fair, the Carlton County Retired Educators thanks everyone who helped out at the Little Red School House this year. It was also great to meet and greet so many former students and welcome their kids and grandkids to this historic old school. I was able to have a good visit with Leah (Sheff) Burr and her family, which sure was fun.
Pastor Deb Hanson- Carlson will be installed at Bethlehem and Bethany Lutheran churches Sept. 15 during their regular worship services. This is also the first day of Sunday School at both churches.
Liz Kabus and I went to see the movie “Overcomer” in Hermantown the other night, and it was really impressive. It’s a wonderful story of self-determination about a beloved basketball coach and history teacher in smalltown America, as he coaches Hannah Scott, the only member of the cross-county team in a Christian high school.
In lieu of Cromwell’s Harvest Festival this year, join us for the End of the Summer Party Thursday- Sunday, Sept. 5-8 at the Cromwell Muni! Come support the city of Cromwell as they embark on new projects in the coming years. The Cromwell Area Community Club is also looking for volunteers for the 2020 Harvest Festival (only) committee for next year to keep the tradition going. Events for the End of Summer Party include bingo at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, sponsored by the Northern Pine Riders; meat raffle at 5:30 p.m. and free jukebox 8 p.m. until midnight on Friday; live music with Heidi Breeggemann 4:30-7:30 p.m. and with the Canyon Creek Band 8 p.m.-midnight Saturday; a B&B gift card raffle at halftime of the Vikings game on Sunday.
Join the folks at TJ’s Country Corner in Mahtowa for the Rat Rod Rendezvous this Labor Day weekend. There will be live music on Saturday, Aug. 31 with the Rockin’ Hollywoods, and with the Canyon Creek Band on Sunday, Sept. 1.
Robert and Ulla Suhonen will be speaking on Sunday, Sept. 8 at the Evangelical Free Church in Wright at 10 a.m. All are welcome.
Cromwell Area Community Club fall raffle tickets are available at area businesses and for sale by club members. First prize is a Winchester shotgun or $300, second through fourth prizes are $50 gift certificates from the Cromwell Self Serve, Farmers Co-op Store in Wright, and Village Pump Saloon and Grill in Tamarack. The drawing will be held at 9 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Cromwell Muni.
Reminder: School starts Sept. 3. If you are new to the area or know of new people with school-age kids planning on attending our school, please call the school for more information and to register for classes: 644-3737 ext. 1000.
Starting in September, the Clothing Depot is open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
There will be a farmers market at Tad Walli and Birdie Harrington’s farm every Friday 11 a.m.-4 p.m. with all homegrown vegetables including zucchini, squash, dill, tomatoes, pumpkins, potatoes, onions, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and more, at 1875 South Finn Road.
That’s all the news from the Edge of Wright. Enjoy the last few days of summer before school starts.
