Three more games meant three more wins this past week for the Cloquet-Carlton girls soccer team, adding up to 13 wins on the season so far.
"I think the team is quietly moving along," said Cloquet-Carlton coach Dustin Randall. "We are cautious, but feel good about our season."
The 'Jacks picked up their 13th win Tuesday by defeating Proctor 2-0. Katie Turner scored the only goal the 'Jacks would need in the 37th minute to give CC the 1-0 lead. In the 54th minute, it was a goal by Kiana Bender with the assist going to Alexa Snesrud to make it 2-0. Defensively the Lumberjacks gave up just one shot on goal to the Rails and goalie Gracie Meagher easily handled it preserve the shutout.
On Saturday, a day they honored seniors and their parents, the Lumberjacks picked up another key Lake Superior Conference win and another shutout when they downed Hermantown 2-0. Katie Turner scored the lone first half goal for Cloquet-Carlton with the assist to Bender. Turner followed it up with another goal in the 78th minute of the game with Bender assisting again making it 2-0 for Cloquet. The 'Jacks put 15 shots on Hawks goalie Bailey Stokke who made 13 saves, while Meagher finished with five saves to pick up the shutout win.
"I really like our defense, we've had very few teams threaten us all year," Randall said. "We are getting scoring from lots of offensive players."
Last Thursday the 'Jacks found themselves in a position they haven't seen often this season - trailing by two goals late in a game. However, Cloquet showed just why they are a tough team to beat this season by scoring three goals late in the game to come from behind over Marshall 4-3.
With Cloquet-Carlton trailing 3-1 in the 55th minute, Cloquet's Olivia Jameson punched a floater from 25 yards out over the outstretched hands of Hilltopper goalie Natalie Welinski to pull the 'Jacks to within 3-2. The Lumberjacks luck turned after the Jameson goal: on the next possession, they scored on a penalty kick by Bender. Then in the 56th minute, Turner floated a shot very similar to Jameson's goal that went up and over Welinski for the 'Jacks third goal in less than two minutes.
The Lumberjacks put 10 shots on Welinski, while Cloquet netminder Meagher made five saves on eight shots. Cloquet-Carlton is now 13-2 on the season.
