A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news
Winter is on its way. Around here, that also means Nordic ski and ski jumping season will be here soon as well — as soon as enough snow falls.
Families who want to get involved in these winter sports are encouraged to join the Cloquet Ski Club, a non-profit, all volunteer group that operates out of Cloquet’s Pine Valley.
This year’s registration is set for Nov. 19 and Nov. 21, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Pine Valley Ski Chalet, 1106 Olympic Drive (past the hockey shelters) in Cloquet. It’s $30 to join the club, which includes the cross country fee, and an additional $20 for ski jumping. Equipment is available to rent for $5 a piece (so skis, boots and poles would be $15).
The Cloquet Ski Club has been around almost as long as the ski jumps, which — along with the cross-country ski trails — are basically the reason the Pine Valley Recreation Area exists. The club is growing fast again. Last year 40 kids signed up for jumping, and 120 for Nordic skiing. They are also looking for volunteers to help out, especially on Sunday afternoons, and donations of smaller skis and boots (NNS, SNS) and other equipment or monetary donations to help with upkeep of the jumps.
