Nicholas Martin Burggraff, 92, of Scanlon died Monday, Nov. 18, 2019 surrounded by his family at Barnes Care in Esko.
He was born March 1, 1927 to Jake and Helen (Trettel) Burggraff in North Prairie, Minnesota. Nick served in the U.S. Army’s 11th Airborne in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. He returned home and was employed for 44 years as a millwright at Potlatch. retiring in 1985. Nick married Bernadette Waldorf on June 14, 1947 in Cloquet, Bernadette died in 1981. He later married Eldora Benson in September 1982.
Nick was a member of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Potlatch Firemen & Oilers Union, Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262, Hebert Kennedy VFW Post 3979, Eagles Club, Moose Club, Knights of Columbus and Potlatch Quarter Century Club. He was also the commander of the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard for many years.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Bernadette; second wife, Eldora; sisters Madgalen Waldorf, Mary Menough, Martha Mrosla, Mathilda Price and Marcella Johnson.
Survivors include his children Paulette (James) Hill, Jacob (Christine) Burggraff, Linda (Fred) Branham, Ramona (Douglas) Paris, and Keith (Penny) Burggraff; stepchildren Joan (Fred) Miller, Marlys (Mark) Amundson, Dixie Lee (Lon Olson), Jacquelyn Sue (Gaeland Priebe), James (Marilyn) Benson, Jerald (Janice) Benson, and Rolland (Carol) Benson; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and special friend, Ailie Merrill.
Visitation: 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Memorial Mass Friday, Nov. 22 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet. Military Honors will be accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. Inurnment will be held in New Calvary Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at Queen of Peace.
