Gratitude can be a funny thing; it's often the case that when you have less of something, you tend to be thankful for it more than when you have it in abundance. Take light, for instance. This time of year we have a lot less of the stuff compared to summertime. By the winter solstice (December 21) we'll have eight and a half hours of daylight versus the almost 16 hours of daylight we get at the end of June.
I think the increasing darkness is one of the reasons holiday lighting gives me such joy. When I picked up my kids from daycare last week all three of us let out squeals of delight as we drove past the Wrenshall deer. It is completely lit up from antlers to white-tipped tail.
This is the third year that Wrenshall High School seniors have taken it upon themselves to spread some holiday cheer with the community.
John Pederson is the senior class advisor and he took the students across the road after a fresh snow. "All the creative decisions came from them," Pederson said. "They really had fun doing it and it's a thing that everyone sees when they come into town. It's a fun way to spread a little Christmas cheer."
The cheer can be contagious. Wrenshall is holding its third annual lighting contest this year. "Deck the Wrenshalls" is open to city residents and those within a one-mile radius of city limits. There is a $5 entry fee due at City Hall by noon on Dec. 10. There will be judging and prizes awarded the same evening.
And speaking of giving thanks, a huge debt of gratitude goes out to the Wrenshall Fire & Rescue department. This volunteer team is made up of 20 of our neighbors and is one of the most important institutions in Wrenshall. Their annual bingo night is Thursday, Dec. 7 starting at 7 p.m. at the school. It's a family-friendly evening of fun that supports this incredible service.
