A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news
Chances are, you’re going to get hit up to help make some local families have their Best Christmas Ever. The popular charity, with local roots, aims to improve the holiday for a few families who, through no fault of their own, are experiencing substantial adversity this year and who could benefit from being shown that others care.
And undoubtedly you will be hearing the bell ringers at the Salvation Army’s annual red kettle drive. The Salvation Army raises a substantial amount of their donations during the Christmas season, and uses its funds to help those most vulnerable with basic needs, such as food, shelter, and clothing.
Today starts the official Christmas shopping season, known throughout the retail industry as Black Friday because it’s the day stores hope start a sales season that will put them “in the black” (i.e. profitable) for the year.
To consumers, it’s a day of deals; shopping; and the thrill of preparing for the Christmas giving season.
Giving comes in many forms, of course. That perfect sweater for your sister or the latest electronic gizmo for your nephew will certainly help spread a little holiday cheer. For many of us, the highlight of the Christmas season involves exchanging thoughtful gifts with family and friends and often a special meal shared with loved ones.
And most of us also take a little time to reflect on the blessings we’ve been given, and our compassion to share some of those blessings with others. Many charities are ready to accept our donations, in the hopes of helping those less fortunate. We hope you find it rewarding to be generous in your contributions.
So, on this weekend of Thanksgiving, remember it’s easier to enjoy all of our own good fortune when we’ve acknowledged other’s needs as well.
