The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is one of the largest volunteer networks in the nation for those 55 and over. One of the great things about this program is that one can use skills and interests developed over a lifetime for the benefit of the community.
This month’s featured volunteer, Bonnie Wenborg, is doing just that. From among her many skills, Wenborg is using her bookkeeping skills to assist the Tri-Community Food Shelf in Cromwell.
When Wenborg heard about the need, she says she figured she had the necessary skills, so why not help? Another thing that sparked her interest with this volunteer position is that she could work online from her home in Carlton, on a schedule convenient for her. And while most everything is done via online, she does go out to the site for the quarterly board meetings. She says the volunteers are a fun and supportive group, and she enjoys seeing how the food shelf is impacting the community.
Wenborg says there was a bit of a learning curve in going from primarily using a Mac computer to using a PC program, but it wasn’t overwhelming. She says her responsibilities primarily include handling the accounts payable and receivable, and preparing necessary financial reports.
Wenborg encourages others who have a few extra hours a week to consider volunteering. She says it is a great way to not only use your skills set, but to improve on them while helping out. In addition, she says volunteering can be a great way to learn new things and meet people.
Outside of volunteering with Tri-Community, Wenborg stays busy assisting various organizations with her graphic design skills. She is also a history and genealogy buff, and has traced her family history back to one of George Washington’s siblings
Thank you, Bonnie, for serving and supporting the people of our community.
