A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news
When I was a kid, my family used to hold weekly meetings to check in on how things were going and what was on the calendar coming up for the week ahead. We’d talk about some highlights from the past week and share what we were looking forward to in the week ahead. This month, there are a lot of things to look forward to in Wrenshall, so pull out a calendar and take notes.
Basketball starts up again, and both boys and girls have home games in December. The girls play Cromwell Dec. 12 and East Central Dec. 19. The boys play Carlton Dec. 6 and LCA on Dec. 10. JV games start at 5:45 and varsity at 7:15 p.m.
The annual holiday concert at the school is Dec. 18. The Wrenshall elementary students, and middle school and high school bands will all perform. It starts at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public in the Wrenshall gymnasium.
Dec. 18 is also the monthly meeting for the Early Childhood Family Education program. ECFE is open to all families with kids who aren’t yet in kindergarten. Anna Baciak will lead the session 9:30-10:30 a.m. and the group will make ornaments and hear some holiday stories and play games. To register, email Baciak at [email protected].
Yearbooks are still for sale, and can be purchased before the end of December. The school is looking for sponsorships to keep the price down for students, so contact Swanson at [email protected] if you are interested in this advertising opportunity.
Speaking of sponsorship opportunities, the BackPack Program is looking for support. This program by the school, United Way and Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank provides backpacks full of healthy food for students who are food insecure at the end of the week. You can sponsor a backpack full of food for one month or a whole year. This is a wonderful gift idea if your family exchanges charity giving for the holidays.
Wrenshall continues to hold its monthly community luncheon on the last Monday of the month. Folks should bring a dish to share and meet at 11:30 a.m. at Wrenshall City Hall. This month the luncheon is scheduled for Dec. 30.
Finally, don’t forget to get out and do some things that aren’t on your calendar — snowshoe out back, make a funny snowman, take a picture of your icy window and enjoy how beautiful our neighborhood is (now that all the shoveling is over).
