A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news
The Carlton Holiday Market was wonderful. My sister, Sherry Erickson, and I took our event passports to at least six businesses in Carlton to shop and get stamped for the drawing at the tree lighting ceremony. We started out at the Bethesda Lutheran Church Bazaar, which is always fun with the homemade baked goods, next to new items, and homemade lefse and lunch. Our next stop was The Greenhouse, where we were treated to a pop-up concert by the Madrigals from Cloquet High School. It was great to sit among the beautiful poinsettias and enjoy the Christmas music while watching the resident cat wind his way between the singers' feet while they performed. There was also the opportunity to take photos with the poinsettias in the background.
We continued our journey with two great-grandchildren in tow. They were able to decorate a Christmas picture frame with lots of Christmas stickers at the Carlton Public Library. Our next stop was CreativEdge Designs to shop for some Christmas decorations. Then we were just in time to get a bowl of chicken wild rice soup at The Third Base Sports Bar. My great-grandkids were getting tired, so Grandma Nikki took them home for naps. Sherry and I continued on to Gateway Goods, the Presbyterian Church and the Oldenburg House. We had a chance to purchase specialty breads, jelly, wool socks, specialty soaps and so much more.
There was so much to choose from and it was fun to shop. It was so much fun to greet people from the community that I don't get to see all the time. What a great day.
The tree lighting ceremony sponsored by the Carlton Area Chamber and Carlton Area Lions was well attended. The city of Carlton public works department made sure the snow was removed to make room for a 17-foot tree donated by the Chub Lake Tree Farm. The Magnolia Café served hot cocoa. After the Christmas trees were lit and decorated, the Madrigals performed Christmas carols to end a wonderful day.
Congratulations to the Carlton Holiday Market committee and the local businesses for a great job organizing the event. Next year should be bigger and better.
The Carlton VFW Christmas Auction was another huge success with about 150 people supporting the event, raising $7,680 for holiday baskets. The gifts go to children and families in the Carlton and Wrenshall school districts and the surrounding area. They also go to Inter-faith residents and veterans, MACV residence in Duluth, local veterans at Silver Bay, Trees for Troops, local veterans in other nursing homes or who are homebound, and veterans and their families who have been referred by a veterans' organization and have exhausted other resources.
