Car/train accident injures woman

An Esko area woman and boy were injured when the car they were in was struck by a train Saturday.

According to a press release from the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, dispatch received a report of a car-train accident on East Stark Road in Thomson Township at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.

According to the sheriff’s office, 41-year-old Brianna Johnson was driving, and a 10-year-old boy was a passenger in the vehicle. Both are from Thomson Township and both were transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth by ambulance. The sheriff’s office said Johnson is expected to make a full recovery. Friends of the family said the boy suffered only minor injuries.

The sheriff’s office said Wednesday that the accident is under investigation, and they could release no further details. The Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota DNR, and St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene and emergency medical services from the Esko Fire Department and Cloquet Area Fire District responded.
