Wrenshall News: Outdoors awaits during holidays

As I was mailing a package from the Duluth post office this week, the woman behind the counter noticed my address. "Wrenshall has the best burgers around, hands down!" she said. "I worked at that post office for a while and I would run across the street for Brickyard almost every day, although I had to start cutting back to once a week."

I wholeheartedly agreed with her and promptly ordered takeout for my family that afternoon. A reminder that you can get your burgers and breakfast this weekend, but the Brickyard will be closed Dec. 23-26 for a very well-deserved Christmas break.

If you are also taking a few days off around the holidays, consider going out your backyard to Jay Cooke State Park. Muzzleloader season has finished and trail grooming is underway. On Saturday, Dec. 21, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., there is a winter solstice phenology snowshoe. Join the park naturalist on a leisure walk to look for nature highlights on this shortest day of the year. Child and adult snowshoes are available for free for the walk, and participants should meet at the River Inn Interpretive center. And you can mark your calendar for the following Saturday, Dec. 28 for a winter bird I.D. program. From 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. you can learn how to identify some common Minnesota winter birds and their favorite foods, and make your own winter bird mobile. You can pre-register by calling Jay Cooke State Park at 218-673-7000.

After-school enrichment at Wrenshall is also expanding its offerings outside. Starting in January, third- through fifth-graders can sign up for Forest Explorers, a monthly program in partnership with the local 4-H. Students will work with Billie Waugh of Carlton to spend time in nature immersion. David Sobel, an environmental educator and author, said "What's important is that children have an opportunity to bond with the natural world, to learn to love it, before being asked to heal its wounds."
