A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news
The current Minnesota Conservation Volunteer Magazine has a 10-page article complete with photographs of our own Julie Collman and her husband, Bob Baker, as they snowmobile, and snowshoe for Big Brook Trout in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Author Michael Dvorak did an excellent job of writing the article and I’m sure he was thrilled to be spending time with Julie and Bob doing what they love doing: fishing. Pine Knot News outdoors writer Bret Baker also wrote about the couple — Bob is his brother — winning the Lake Vermilion muskie tournament in the Oct. 11 issue.
Our community was saddened to hear of the passing of Jeanne Hansen, 84, on Dec. 29. Her memorial service was held Jan. 4 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell.
There were so many tributes to Jeanne from her family and friends. The story I remember best is when Jeanne and neighbor MaryAnn French would walk almost every day along Highway 210. One day a bear crossed the road in front of them and when MaryAnn got home she asked her son Jay if they had anything to worry about? Jay answered, “No, not as long as you can run faster than Jeanne.”
We will surely miss her spirit and enthusiasm for life and offer our sincere sympathy to her husband Lincoln, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Also passing away recently: Clinton Hakamaki, 85, died on Dec. 19, and Carolyn Schatz, 83, died on Dec. 21. Alice Letty David, 81, Cromwell class of 1956, died Jan. 2. Send cards to her husband, Richard David, at 9150 Colfax, Bloomington MN 55420 or to her surviving brother, Gerald Letty, at 5443 Markusen Road, Cromwell, MN 55726.

The CACC met Jan. 2 to discuss plans for 2020. Cromwell Harvest Fest dates are September 11-13. The club continues to seek new members and volunteers willing to serve on community events including the Father Daughter Ball, Harvest Fest, community gardens, roadside cleanup, etc. It is a great way to get out of the house and meet people while performing a worthwhile cause. If interested, plan to attend a monthly meeting the first Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. at Cardinal Court first floor cafe. Contact CACC president Lynn Odegaard for more information at 218-644-3544.
There has been an abundance of sickness throughout all grade levels. Please be diligent in making sure your child is fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school. If they are vomiting, they also need to stay home for 24 hours after the last occurrence. Encourage regular hand washing and covering of coughs to help limit the spread of germs. This includes visits to our area nursing care facility.
Congratulations to Micah Pocernich, son of Marsha and Bill Pocernich, as he set the record for most career points in boys basketball with 1,506 points.
I’m still home recuperating from knee replacement and it’s going slow, but therapy is a must. Signing out from the edge of Wright.
