Wright/Cromwell news

Our sympathy to the family of Allan William Karki Sr., 79, of Cromwell who passed away Jan. 9 with his children by his side. Upon Al’s request there will be a private family burial in West Branch Cemetery in Kalevala Township in the spring.

Allan was the principal during the years that I taught in Wright (1968-1993) and we had many good times over the years. Our faculty was like a family and we enjoyed getting together with him from time to time during retirement. He was always encouraging and helpful to the staff. He will be especially missed by Bill Hoppe and Johnny Manninen.

Our sympathy to the family of Ruthie Smith, who passed away Jan. 7 in Villa Vista Care Center in Cromwell.

Ruth married her high school sweetheart Clarence “Junie” Smith Jr. in 1951and they raised eight children on their dairy farm. Ruth was an accomplished pianist and piano teacher. Services were Jan. 10 with burial in Eagle Lake Cemetery in the spring.

The Luminary Service at the Villa Vista Jan. 12 was a wonderful way to remember the folks that passed away in 2019. Special music whos provided by the Bethany Choir singing “Borning Cry” and Walter Collman on the saxophone. I was honored to emcee the program and give the message. Thanks go to Pat Cain and Julie Hanson on the piano. The Villa Vista provided goodies and many families were represented.

Our one-act play cast will be performing “Hard Candy” at sub-sections in Aitkin on Jan. 25. A community performance is set for 7 p.m. Jan. 29 in the auditorium.

We have officially kicked off our Pennies for Patients program this week in hopes of helping both children and adults in their fight against blood cancer. Your child should come home with their own collection box to help. We are also encouraging students to set up an online page to receive donations, so that our school can make our biggest impact ever for this mission. We will run our penny drive through the month of January, but don’t wait. Let’s crush our goal of $500. Student council members will set up at our home basketball games during the month of January in order to collect donations. Donations can be turned into any student council member or the school office.
