Letters to the editor: Consolidation should be affordable option

I am for consolidation. But don’t three (Wrenshall) plus one (Carlton) failed referendums tell us something? Maybe asking for the moon is too much for the taxpayers to bear.

The Wrenshall School Board has voted for a $9.3 million non-voter approved levy and now wants an additional $29 million if we consolidate.

Here’s my idea: The two boards vote to consolidate upon voter approval; then get together, brainstorm, ask the public to participate. Surely there are people who have an area of expertise that will be helpful.

Then sharpen your pencils and look what we need, not want. We need some “fixing” but not two gyms, 350-person auditorium, swimming pool, etc. What can we afford and what will the taxpayers pay for? Ask Carlton to look at our huge rec building. What can you use it for versus tearing it down? How can we make it usable?

After all, Rep. Mike Sundin said it was a real good building. Then everybody loved it.

Tony Sheda, Wrenshall
