Wrenshall celebrates homecoming and reading this month

It’s homecoming week for Wrenshall!

Monday kicked off the festivities with a rally featuring a family feud game show with the homecoming court as contestants, as well as a scooter relay race. There were dress-up days throughout the week, with Friday’s basketball game against Floodwood the culmination of all the fun and games. The JV boys team plays at 4:45 p.m. and the varsity game is at 6:15 p.m.

Friday also marks the 100th day of the school year.

It’s a day that many schools mark with fanfare (what a great way to learn about large numbers!) and this year Wrenshall is hosting published author Bridget Reistad for a book reading with elementary students. Reistad is a former Wrenshall school teacher and she’ll be reading from her book, “Hundredth Day Disaster,” which follows some humorous hijinks in a classroom setting. The book also introduces young readers to punctuation, sight words, and reading comprehension skills. Brian Barber, a longtime member of the Wrenshall Food Farm and one of Duluth’s favorite local artists, did the illustrations for this special story.

And, speaking of books, there are a couple weeks left in February, so you can still participate in “I love to read” month along with other Wrenshall residents.

The current “Images” school newsletter contains a calendar of special reading assignments for each day. For instance, Monday, Feb. 17 you can read a poem, on Feb. 20 you can read about a leader, and try an electronic blackout day Feb. 24. Think about all the reading you could get done if you weren’t checking your social media or playing a video game!
