Students capture work of SWCD land practices

Esko High School students partnered with the Carlton County Soil and Water Conservation District to create six videos highlighting conservation programs.

The competition addressed the challenges of outreach and public awareness by using the talents of local students in technology and creativity to create the videos. Sophomores in Chris Evavold's and Laura Zimny's science classes got word in October about the competition. Interested students then joined for a tour of a local conservation project. They had until early January to create final products utilizing what they had gathered from the field day and for themselves.

Six videos were submitted by 11 students who captured the motives and the satisfaction of the landowner while blending in the overarching mission of conservation by the SWCD.

SWCD supervisors, staff, and county board members noted how well the videos were done and the impressive capabilities of the students.

Three videos were chosen to be featured on SWCD online pages with the winners, Jack McWilliams and Lexi Tester, awarded a $100 prize. Runners-up were Audrey Menor, Emily Hanson and Michael Cornell.
