Cloquet police make changes

The Cloquet Police Department announced the following changes in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic and the decision to close city buildings in Cloquet to members of the public for now, including the joint city hall and police building at 101 14th Street.

Calls for service

Calls for service requests will continue to be routed through the Carlton County

Sheriff’s Office dispatch center.

• For emergencies, call 911

• The non-emergency number is 218-384-4185

A phone to contact dispatch will remain available in the southwest lobby at the police department.

Non-emergency, non-violent crimes where a suspect is not readily known, will be handled via telephone or email.

To speak with a clerical staff member at the Cloquet Police Department, they can be reached at 218-879-1247. They cannot dispatch or assign an officer to a call for service through this number.

New procedures

CPD staff is practicing social distancing. If an officer is required to respond to a residence, meet the officer outside whenever possible.

Officers will be issuing citations instead of arrests for misdemeanor offenses, when possible. Non-essential community engagements are temporarily suspended.

Fingerprinting services for non-legal purposes are temporarily suspended.

Officer email addresses have been added to the city webpage at https://www.cloquetmn.gov/departments/police.

Reports, tips and permits

Interim Police Chief Derek Randall said the department is currently working on creating a form that will allow citizens to file a report online. Once completed, it will be made available through the city’s webpage. A link will also be posted via the police department’s social media pages.

Non-emergencies reports can be sent to [email protected] email address, or via the Nixle reporting/tipping system.

Send tips to Nixle via SMS by texting TIP CLOQUETPD followed by your message to 888777. Links to Nixle can also be found on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Permits to purchase (not carry) a firearm form will be added to the webpage as soon as possible. Completed forms can be sent to [email protected]. (A copy of the applicant’s driver’s license is required.)

Permits to carry (conceal and carry) are handled by the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office.
