Happy Mother’s Day. During this time of social distancing, let us take time to honor moms and to show our appreciation for their continued love and support on Sunday.
The first Mother’s Day in the United States was celebrated on May 12, 1908, at the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church to honor Anna Jarvis’ mother.
Mother’s Day can actually be traced back to the 17th century in England. Mothering Sunday was the fourth Sunday of Lent, and was a special day when rules about fasting and penance were set aside.
The traditional Mother’s Day flower is the carnation, thanks to Anne Jarvis. Please take time to honor all of the mothers and stand-in moms that you know. Stay safe and, if possible, stay home.
Again, I want to send out a thank-you to the doctors, nurses, other medical staff, first responders, firefighters, police officers and all the people on the front lines who are putting their safety in harm’s way to keep us all safe. I especially want to thank the men and women who work in the grocery stores, who are at their jobs every day during this difficult time. Reminder: Please wear a mask and use social distancing.
I am still turning on my Christmas trees, reindeer and lights on my house until we get the green light to begin getting back to the new normal. But soon I will be putting more of the lights away until the holidays are upon us again.
Upcoming events include the City of Carlton community cleanup/pickup on May 12. The Carlton High School community cleanup was canceled this year.
The Carlton recycling shed is open Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 1-6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please use social distancing for the safety of the employees and community members who are also using the recycling area. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated.
