Obituary: Mildred Marie (Olson) Kjoberg

Mildred Marie (Olson) Kjoberg, 101, of Cloquet died June 1, 2020.

She was born on Jan. 12, 1919 to Swedish immigrant parents, Emil A. and Hulda M. Olson.

Her mother, a survivor of the 1918 fire, saved the family by hiding in a culvert in Brookston. She settled in Brookston where Mildred attended grade school and high school, graduating salutatorian of her class. Mildred attended the Duluth State Teachers College, now UMD, and received her degree to teach elementary education. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Aitkin. Mildred returned home to Brookston to care for her ailing mother. She took the Civil Service exam and was hired in Duluth in the Register of Deeds office of the St. Louis County Courthouse, where she worked for 32 years.

She met the love of her life, Harold Kjoberg, and they married in 1945. They were married for 53 wonderful years. They traveled in their motorhome across the USA and Baja Peninsula. They made many trips to Europe to visit relatives in Sweden and Norway.

Millie had many interests. She loved playing cards every Tuesday with friends at the Cloquet Senior Center. She liked to read, dance, care for her flowers and listen to the national news. She knew everything that was going on in the world. Millie liked sports and played softball on a team from Cloquet, where she pitched the team to the state title.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her mother and father; brothers, William C. and Carl E. Olson; and nephews and nieces.

She is survived by several special nieces and nephews, and dear friends and relatives in Sweden and Norway. She also leaves special friends and dear neighbors who were always there for her and lent a helping hand.

Private family services will be held. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
