Lloyd C. Schmitz, 83, of Carlton passed away July 3, 2020 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.
He was born Nov. 23, 1936, in Twin Lakes Township, Carlton County, the son of Conrad and Erna (Breitkreutz) Schmitz.
Lloyd graduated from Carlton High School and was united in marriage to Ellen E. Granholm on Sept. 20, 1958. He served in the Minnesota National Guard. Lloyd worked for the Conwed Corporation in Cloquet for 23 years and then as a mechanic for the Carlton County highway department for 16 years. He also owned Schmitz Backhoe Service for 35 years. Lloyd was a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Carlton, the Disabled American Veterans, and served on the Carlton school board for 12 years. After his retirement in 2000, he and Ellen wintered in Apache Junction, Arizona for 17 years.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clarence Schmitz; two sisters, Betty Eriksen and Roseanetta Schmitz; and one granddaughter, April Schmitz.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen; children, Carrie (Brad) Buller, Randy Schmitz, Craig (Roxane) Schmitz, and Colleen (Tim) Spicer; seven grandchildren, Aaron Buller, Autumn (Anthony Mazzitello) Buller, Adrian (Shaylyn) Buller, Andrew Buller, Adam (Amanda) Schmitz, Cody Spicer, and Stephanie Schmitz; nine great-grandchildren; one expected great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, and resuming 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, July 8, all at Nelson Funeral Care. Interment service will be at Hillside Cemetery with Military Honors presented by the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow in the fellowship room at the funeral home.
