The University of Minnesota Extension Service is taking applications for those wanting to become master gardener volunteers. Applications are being accepted for the Carlton County program until Oct. 31.
Individuals selected for the program begin an internship that starts with master gardener core course training in January. It is taught online through the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Instructors are Extension educators and faculty.
Following the course, interns will complete volunteer service in the first year, working with other local master gardener volunteers on a variety of projects that educate the public about gardening and horticulture: answering plant questions by phone or at an information booth, writing a newspaper column, or making a presentation to a community group.
The primary projects in Carlton County include plant sales, garden tours, community gardens and question-and-answer booths.
After completing the internship, volunteers become certified University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners. To remain certified, gardeners must contribute at least 25 hours of volunteer service annually.
“The only prerequisite is a love of gardening,” said Ann Rust, Carlton County Extension volunteer coordinator and horticulture assistant. “The core course will teach you the rest.”
