Coronavirus has claimed the fall musical at Cloquet High School, director Darrell Davey announced “with a heavy heart” on the CHS Theatre Facebook group page last week.
Davey said the cancellation came per administration guidance and following school and health protocols. Cloquet’s fall musicals usually involve large casts and, by definition, lots of singing. Scientists have determined that Covid-19 can be spread by droplets that are expelled from the mouth while talking and particularly while singing.
“As unfortunate as this is, your health and safety comes first and it is our hope that by following this we will have a better chance to have a spring performance,” Davey wrote.
In response to suggestions that Cloquet follow the lead of Zion’s New Wine and make a socially distanced movie of the production, Davey said that isn’t an option for the school this fall.
Davey has been an assistant director under Landon Hall and Kevin Hamre, and this would have been his first stint as director for the popular CHS musical.
